How an Acne Treatment Works
You have acne, or pimples, and you want to get rid of them. You’re looking into purchasing acne products, or maybe undergoing acne treatment, but you’re not sure which one is your best bet. Well, first things first, you need to know how these acne products work. Only then you can make an educated choice of buying the best treatment or product for your problem.
Generally, these are the problems the acne products are solving:
- Prevent pore blockage - What are blocked pores? The pores are blocked by skin cells that have been shed from the lining of the skin pore and have bunched together. Pore blockage causes developing blackheads or whiteheads. When your pores are blocked, dirt and oil cannot escape out of the skin. Acne natural treatments remove the blockage and control the way the skin cells are shed, to prevent future pore blocking.
Acne products with benzoyl peroxide are used to melt down the keratin layer on a pimple, and help avoiding pore blocking. - Killing skin bacteria – Propionibacterium acnes is a useful bacteria found naturally on the surface of the human skin. Usually this bacteria keeps the skin from being invaded from harmful bacteria. However, when oil is trapped in the hair follicles, the P. acnes bacteria will stat to grow in the blocked pore. And this is when the p. acnes bacteria becomes harmful instead of useful. The bacteria will produce some chemicals that simply change the skin oil composition, making it more irritating to the skin and causing inflammation.
- Overactive oil glands - Oil glands, also called sebaceous glands are located deep in the skin. Each of these oil glands is connected to a follicle that contains a hair. This gland produces oil (called sebum), that flows to the skin surface to lubricate these hair follicles and the surrounding skin. Oil glands have different sizes. The larger ones are those commonly associated with visible skin pores.
Without going much deeper in the technicalities of what is happening there, the oil glands produce oil hormones. Now, during increased stress, these hormones produces are much more than usual, which cause an the oil glands to be enlarged. Another cause of oil glands enlargements is also puberty due to hormonal changes. - Reduce acne swelling – If your acne is enhanced by swelling, you want to reduce it, to make it less visible. There are some ways to achieve this, for example using hormonal treatments such as cortisone injections, or using special make-up that conceals these swelling, or buying products that are specifically designed for this purpose.
Once you know the multiple ways acne products are working, it is easier to search for the best acne treatment, suitable for your type of skin and particular problem.
